Jan. 2006 Girls Rule on Ice
The challenge: A game of Ringette between the Tween Arnprior/McNab Devil Ringette Club and the Arnprior PeeWee Packers. The prize: Schoolyard Bragging Rights. Excitement was in the air as both the boys and girls anxiously awaited the beginning of the game. The rules were all Ringette except the fact the girls were allowed body contact on the boys but the boys were playing non-contact. The pace was fast right from the start with the girls taking full advantage of the fact the boys did not know the rules. The Packers were frustrated as every time they got the ring play was whistled down for various infractions. Packer goalie Daniel Charbonneau was sharp but 2 minutes in Devils Kelsey Budarick whipped a shot top shelf to the glove side to give the girls a 1-0 lead. The girls continued pressure until Lindsey Graham-McCourt’s wrist shot from the slot found the back of the net and the girls ended the period up 2-0. Being a fun game teams switched goaltenders at half time with Devil goalie Kenzie Martin playing for the boys and Packer net minder Michael Cheslock heading to the girls end. The Packer boys were adjusting quite well as the game progressed turning the match into an end to end game which saw both goalies tested with many quality scoring opportunities until Kelsey Budarick scored her second goal halfway through the second period. Shortly thereafter Devils went up 4-0 when Stephanie Baker converted a pass from Shelby-Lyn Miller ending the scoring for the girls. The boys however would not let up until with less than 2 minutes to play they finally managed to put one by their own goalie Michael Cheslock who I am sure will be subject to some harassment from fellow team mates for helping the girls win the game 4-1. Don’t worry Michael you made some friends on the girl’s team, which some day will be more than worth the teasing!! Both teams played very well having a lot of fun while showing excellent sportsmanship and entertaining the many parents and friends in attendance.
